This week is Stroke Awareness Week, warning us about one of the leading causes of death and disability. One in six Australians will be affected by stroke in their lifetime.
Strokes are caused by either a blood clot, or a blood vessel rupture causing damage in the brain. You need to learn about the risk factors leading to stroke, and to be able to quickly recognise the signs in the event of stroke. Remember F.A.S.T:
Face: Check for facial or mouth drop
Arms: Can person lift both arms?
Speech: Is speech slurred? Can the person understand you?
Time: Time is critical. If you notice any of these signs, call 000 immediately.
As part of good general health, a thorough eye examination can often give valuable insight for risk of stroke and other vascular diseases, by identifying related signs and symptoms early.
